Strengthening

Where structures have lost capacity due to attack of the concrete and corrosion of the reinforcement, or where changes in use or code demand an increase in loading capacity, structural strengthening can be achieved by a number of routes.

Traditionally, sections could be increased by the addition of extra reinforcement and concrete or with steel plates bolted and fixed by resin-based adhesives. Where minimal additional loading or change in dimension is required there are now also a range strengthening options employing high performance fibre reinforced composites based on carbon, glass or aramid in epoxy matrices.
